Whale season starts each year around this time in the Central Pacific. From around December 8th to March 23rd you can witness the breathtaking display of the humpback whales migration through Puerto Vallarta & Riviera Nayarit.
During this season, the whales migrate from the Arctic waters to visit the warm tropical oceans of Los Cabos & Banderas Bay, searching for a familiar spot to reproduce. This gives visitors & locals the opportunity for front row seats to a magnificent show of one of the largest mammals in the world. unt full-suspension professional grade mountain bikes and take to the charming streets off the well-worn tourist path on the shores of town.
Each year, approximately 300-500 Humpback Whales are counted around Banderas Bay. The species is considered the fifth largest whale in the world with a total length between 12-19 meters, & weighing up to 40 tons!
There are several ways to witness the spectacular display of these animals in the Vallarta area. One of the best ways to watch the beautiful whales in their natural habitat is with a professional, guided tour. You can observe whales jumping & even hear them singing under the water, a truly moving experience.
From Puerto Vallarta to Punta de Mita, there are numerous places to take these tours along the Bay of Banderas. You can also find companies beyond the bay in places like Sayulita and Rincon de Guayabitos.
It is important to ensure you are observing these creatures in the most eco-friendly environment as possible. Look for companies with an official permit from the Semarnat (The Mexican Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources). Some of the credible companies that offer eco-friendly tours are Ecotours de México, Vallarta Adventures or Punta Mita Expeditions.
